Day 170 - The Pirate's Last Wave

Dale's true identity as a pirate has finally been revealed. And how do you know if you are a pirate? You just "Arrrrrrrr!!"

Since today was the last wave, I thought we should take a minute to review a few
Pirate
Rules (as found on tensionnot.com) and discover how Dale has either obeyed these rules or, in pirate-like fashion, totally disregarded them.

1. When fishing, a pirate uses either a sword, a knife, or
his bare hands. Use of a hook is only acceptable in the event the pirate is missing a hand. (see Day 121, Day 113, and Day 93)

2. Parrots are the preferred pirate companion (see Day 134). Monkeys are an acceptable substitute, unless they fling their feces at people. Then they are an awesome substitute.

3. No pirate shall ever sit on a toilet seat, for any reason. (see Day 167)

4. Pirates never use the words "fresh" or "feelings," and certainly not together (as in "I have that not-so-fresh feeling"). (see Day 149)

5. Peglegs must be made of timber or some other suitable wood. Plastic, ceramic, porcelain, or metal peglegs are utterly unacceptable, simply because it complicates the use of the phrase "shiver me timbers."

6. Pirates do not wear eyeglasses or bifocals unless they are looking at a treasure map, and even then they are allowed only a monacle. Any comments about "Mr. Peanut" while wearing the monacle are prohibited. (again, Day 167)

7. A pirate must never visit a tanning salon. If he is not already tan enough (Day 123) from searching for treasure, he hasn't been searching hard enough.

8. A pirate may never wear another man's clothing, unless he first kills that man. [Day 19 --what man would be caught dead in those clothes?]

9. No pirate may do the arm movements for "YMCA", or engage in country-western line-dancing. (see Day 15, Day 23, and Day 32)

10. Under no circumstances is a comb-over an acceptable pirate hairdo. [Bad Hair Days? He had a few... see Day 52, Day 49, Day 48, and Day 39]

11. Only a pirate is capable of killing another pirate. If you are not a pirate (let's say a ninja) and wish to challenge a pirate, they have a word for that. Corpse. [Did somebody say Ninja? see Day 147]

12. Three-cornered hats, headbands and bandanas are the only acceptable headwear for pirates. Fedoras, bowler derbies, baseball caps, mickey ears, top hats, sombreros, or anything with lace and flowers will be removed from the vessel-- head included. A grace period of one minute is allowed for hats looted from a tailory. [And a few bad hats: Day 98, Day 41, Day 28, and Day 154 for starters]

13. No pirate shall drink Grog out of a glass. Grog is only to be consumed either straight from the barrel, or from a mug heavy enough to to kill a man. (see Day 156)

14. A pirate shall never wear lipstick, nail polish, or capri pants. Actually, that kinda goes without saying. [
Nothing in the rules about dresses? See Day 139, Day 146, Day 132, Day 130, or even just yesterday]

15. Pirates shall always wear boots, except in the case of a peg leg. Then one boot is acceptable. Flip-flops are right out.

[flip-flops? Well those would be EVERY DAY. This rule must not apply to Hawaiian Pirates, as Dale wore his "Hawaiian slipper" every day for the first 61 days. Then he mixed in other foot apparel as costumes required: Day 62 (boot!), Day 81 (clown shoe), Day 82 (boot!), Day 84 (boot!), Day 85 (boot!) Day 88 (board shoe), Day 89 (boot!), Day 95 (boot!), Day 96 (boot!), Day 100 (boot!), Day 101 (boot!), Day 109 (boot!), Day 113 (boot!), Day 116 (Spartan sandal), Day 140 (boot!), Day 144 (boot!), Day 148 (Leprechaun), Day 158 (clown shoe)]

  4. I wish I'd known of your blog earlier. Looks like I could have had a lot of laughs throughout the year! You are very creative. Your son is very blessed to have a dad that would go to so much work to show his love for him. :)

  6. Just came over from the article on deseretnews.com. this is AWESOME! I'm totally cracking up at the different costumes. what a great dad to take this much time and effort to show his son how much he's loved. He'll remember it for a lifetime. no regrets, right? that's what life is all about!

  8. Dale, this was great. but having known you since i was a little kid, i am not at all surprised.

  9. I read about you on the Deseret News. This display of creativity and love made my heart smile. I am inspired to be a bit more fun for my own 15-year-old son, but mostly -- for myself. Your goofiness translates into happiness. Thanks for sharing.

  11. I saw this on The blaze today and left a comment. I think this is awesome what you do sir and commend you for it. Just like I told the Blaze. I appreciate their site but I thought it was a bad article since it only focused on how embarrassed you make your son. This is something that these kids will NEVER forget and will grow to appreciate one day. Probably would have been better done to gradeschool kids lol but still and all. GREAT JOB DALE.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Love this!!! Great memories not for your own family but for the rest of the kids on the bus!

    ReplyDelete
  13. You are my hero. When my one-year-old is capable of embarrassment, I will come to you for advice.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Note that you basically inadvertantly reinforced bus and school attendance by doing this. Awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I just was informed of this blog. You are hilarious!!! I love this I am crying as Im looking at the pictures. My daughter who is 20 and who has found me embarassing thinks you are awesome and funny, NOT embarassing at all. You go Dad!!!

  16. Sir you are out of your mind, and it's fantastic! good on ya sir.

  18. My mother did this to me! Once she wore a huge Mexican sombrero; another time she wore a fur coat on a blistering hot day; she met my brother with the lawn mower and a sign that said "Welcome Home, Tommy;" or she'd dress as a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader and carry a laundry basket. I'm relieved to know I'm not the only kid who grew up being tormented in this special way. But in some ways I can't really believe someone else would even think of this. I'm just sad I can't send the link to my mom. I lost her to Leukemia 8.5 years ago. I'm 40 years old and now I wouldn't trade all those moments. (or the other crazy things she did, like meeting my first plane home from grad school at Christmas with a sign that read "Troy Aikman") I guess sending it to my brother, who suffered along with me, will have to do. Wow. I homeschool my kids, so I won't be able to wave at their bus, but I'll think of something. Thank you so much for this trip down memory lane! (I found your blog via a news article about you that a friend posted on Facebook from the Deseret News in Utah, I grew up and live in Texas.)

    ReplyDelete
  19. This is so great. You are an inspiration to me. My kids are mortified if I head to the bus stop in anything resembling pjs. Imagine the embarrassment if I wore a costume!! Keep it up!

  27. I think this is the coolest thing I've ever read about a dad and his son. The son may have cringed in embarrassment, but he'll remember this and treasure it for the rest of his life.

    ReplyDelete
  28. You're the coolest dad ever! I'm taking notes for when my three year old gets into school. Really, you made my heart grow three times it's size today.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Everyone deserves a dad like this. How can you be embarrassed when you dad is so awesome? This is something to be proud about.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Ha! Ha! HAwesome!! :D What a lucky kid! ;D

  31. Today was a special day for to be a dad, I baptized my first born son (8), had a party for him, played whiffleball, took him to his baseball game, he went 3 for 3 (so did my 6 year old :)), we went swimming, bbq'ed, read the scriptures, prayed, tucked them into bed... And then I read this story on the Blaze, and looked at every picture and laughed out loud, it was a perfect ending to a nearly perfect day for me!

Thank you so much for shining your light before our world! The most incredible thing to me is that you probably had no idea the hearts you would warm around the world the day you wore your Chargers jersey... You just thought you were waving bye to your son in a unique way every morning.

    ReplyDelete
  32. You are an AMAZING dad! and very creative and clever too! What a nice change to have something so great covered in the news.

  33. I gave you the "Most Creative Dad of the School Year Award!" Did you also attend the Parent-Teacher conferences in a costume too...ha! How were you able to find all of the costumes? They must have cost a fortune!

  39. I terrorised my eldest son for about 3 years by threatening to dress up as a fluffy pink bunny rabbit to walk him to school if he didn't do exactly what I said. It worked a treat, I'd just look at him, say 'the bunny' and he'd do exactly as he was asked.

  69. Dude, very funny and original your idea ... children will never forget things like this ... likewise not forget our stories, our jokes, our victories and defeats ... when we left for another plane, love and comedy mingle in a hybrid sense .. But only in Portuguese I can rightly say: Saudade ... like nostalgia, but good, right?

My son is 8 years old ... as soon as he completes a 14, 15, he will have problems ... hahahahaha ... uhuhuhuhuhuhuhuh ....

Dude, Keep doing That Funny shit ...

  70. Awesomeness! I love this! Just found this blog (from a facebook link) and so the first thing I saw was the pirate costume. I thought to myself, "Wow...the guy did a peg leg...wonder how he did that?" ;) I think you are WONDERFUL!!!!

  71. I think it's great you took the time to create a funny memory for your family. Not just one but 179 days worth of fun. Also the fact that you gave your son your attention for that length of time. How many parents do anything with their children today. Too Busy! Not always their fault but it still comes down to no attention for their children. Seriously though you need to come up with a new idea for your youngest boy and you have plenty of time for that. I hope you keep this view point and perspective on life. I would've loved to have had a father like you. Keep it up! Kathy Gibbons Fountain Valley, CA

It's so fun and thoughtful for a Dad to spend time every day doing something special for his children. You are a super Dad and any child would be lucky to have you!!!
I wish you lived in my neighborhood so I could see such a delightful display everyday.

  127. This is a great project and it speaks volumes of your commitment to being involved in every day of your child's life.

You personalized every morning he left your home with a public display of loving humility. If that ain't good parenting... what is?

  136. You, Sir, are a shining example of Fatherhood! I have to say that this is among the more original and fun blogs I've found on the vast ocean of the Blogosphere...very well done!

A side note: please correct me if I'm wrong. I understand that the phrase "Shiver Me Timbers!" came from timber being used for the mast, deck, etc. When the wood had been damaged by cannon fire or collision, then the splinters (some very large, deadly, and flying fast) were called "shivers"...hence, Shiver Me Timbers!

Which, face it, sounds far groovier than "splinter me wood!"

Oh yeah, PS: Rule #2 made me laugh coffee out of my nose...Thanks!

  139. This is amazing! You remind me of my dad's wonderful sense of humor. One year for Halloween he wore a Superman costume while he was his wheelchair and told people he was Christopher Reeve. I didn't always appreciate his humor growing up... But now that he's gone, I'd give anything to be embarrassed by dad again!
