Clarifications and Explanations

First of all, we’d like to give a shout out to the Greater Salt Lake Unified Fire Authority Station 116. As our publicity has grown, Dale’s brother, Terry (a firefighter/paramedic at the fire station there), has been receiving unending grief from his fellow firefighters. To that we say, “Keep it up!” And thanks for helping us out with Day 62 and Day 64.

We enjoy reading the comments posted here on our blog. We have read each and every one. Thanks for the enthusiasm. We also feel that we may need to clarify a few things.

Cost: We have spent less than fifty US dollars on costumes and props for this blog. Most of these costumes were borrowed from neighbors and friends (you’d be surprised what your neighbors have in their closets!), or found in our costume boxes from years past.

Other children: Yes, we have other children. Our oldest, Rikki, is a sophomore at Utah State University. She is majoring in Computer Science. Our youngest, Riot, will be entering 2nd grade next year. He does not ride the bus. You can see him joining in the waves on Day 26 and Day 128. Rain is the middle child and does, in fact, like his name. His full name is Makani Rain Price, but he has gone by “Rain” for most of his life.

About Rain: He is genetically predisposed to having a good sense of humor. He’s a fun, likable guy, with a 4.0 GPA in Honors classes. He plays the trumpet in the American Fork High School Marching Band (state champions). He’ll be marching in the 2012 Tournament of Roses Parade (in Pasadena, California on January 2, 2012). And he’s on the verge of earning his Boy Scout of America "Eagle Scout" award. And yes, he did laugh at the waves. If you look closely at some of the pictures, you’ll see that he and his friends were waving back. He knows how to laugh. He’s a great kid.

Guns and camo: Some have wondered about the many posts of Dale in camouflage, and the pictures with guns. Dale used to own a chain of paintball stores, aptly named “Pegleg Paintball.” Being in the paintball industry for over twenty years, he has accumulated quite a variety of paintball clothing and, let’s just say, a few paintball guns. He’s an amazing airsmith and has fixed just about every paintball gun ever made.

Dale: is now a stay at home dad, actively parenting our three kids. He’s a pretty decent mechanic, landscaper, housekeeper, trophy husband (complete with a kickstand), and an amazing dad. We've been happily married for over 22 years.

Rochelle: I have an M.S. degree in Manufacturing Engineering from Brigham Young University. I’ve worked at ProModel Corporation for the past twelve years. I enjoy running, cycling, and laughing with my family. I took the pictures, found silly things to say about them (although many left me speechless), and posted this craziness to the blog.

Political correctness: We realize that many of these waves are not politically correct. We never claimed to be PC. For goodness sake, it’s humor people. Good thing we aren’t running for office of any kind. Although we did get a laugh out of a recent Tweet that said Dale should be “Ruler of the World.”

  1. Hello. Your blog was featured on the home page of ninemsn in Australia this morning. Here is the link: http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/8257735/dad-dresses-up-in-170-costumes-to-farewell-son

  4. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing all of your waves. I always looked forward to seeing what costume you would come up with next.
It makes me wish that my kids rode the bus .......
Will you be doing this again this next school year?
If I see you at any marching band competitions, I'll wave and say hello :)

  6. This is the first time I've seen this--a friend posted it on FB. I think you're fantastic parents! If more kids had families this loving and involved, our world would be a much better place. From your post it sounds like you've received some criticism. I hope you can just ignore the people who are too unimaginative to understand and keep being amazing!

  7. This is fabulous and I feel a bit sad that you felt the need to write such a patient and thorough 'explanation' and 'disclaimer', people really have no sense of humour do they?!

  8. I just want to salute someone who has such a sublime sense of the ridiculous and has gone to such lengths to make their kids' childhoods fun. Every child on that bus will forever remember laughing his/her way to school thanks to you...what a joy! I'm a big fan of Patch Adams and greatly admire those who can abandon conventions in order to bring a smile. I even have a child whose middle name is Rain too :) Wishing you and your family continued fun and laughter. Lorraine xx

  12. Thanks for putting this online -- I had so much fun reading these entries. I also pointed them out to my fourteen-year-old niece (I'm her guardian) as proof that her aunt and uncle really don't do THAT much to embarrass her. ;)

  13. LOVE IT!!! What a LUCKY, LUCKY family. Everyone should do something like this at least once in there life. I have nearly been crying at the thought of how awesome this is. I don't understand the need for the disclaimer?? If everyone in the world had the mind to do something like this with their time we wouldn't have the need for nonsense like disclaimers (Or other such harsh nonsense / relities like 'extremists' for that matter). Also from Australia. Keep it up!!

  14. Awesome, brilliant, genius! If only you gave lessons on how to be the perfect parent. I would have my husband booked in the front row of the class. Also following along from Australia.

  16. Dale reminds me so much of my stepdad, who has a wicked, brilliant, endlessly creative sense of humor and loves his kids as much as I can tell Dale loves his. I read the Deseret News story with a huge grin and tears in my eyes. Then I forwarded the link to my mom and stepdad. If only more parents were as enthusiastic and energetic about expressing their love for their kids - we would be so much better off! Thanks, Dale, for sharing your fantastic sense of humor with us - we need more Dales in this world!!!

  18. I came across your blog via a newspaper article posted to Facebook by a friend of mine. All I can say is BRAVO! I am an involved parent myself AND I drive the school bus. I can't tell you how floored {and thrilled!} I would be if one of the parents did this. I just keep smiling when I think of this. And Tinkerbell was my favourite. LOL I actually scrolled through every single one. {Insert standing ovation here}

  27. Hello.

You may be interested in the Metafilter conversation that is happening about this if you are not already.

    http://www.metafilter.com/104220/I-hope-this-lives-with-him-for-the-rest-of-his-life#commentpreview

I come down on the awesome side of this, but there are a few who are *insisting* despite the evidence how this is an absolutely terrible thing to have done to a teenager. I personally think those people may wish to loosen up.

Often at Metafilter when these types of conversations go down, the person the conversation is about may choose to stop by with their own take on the matter that lays the debate to rest. Not that you have to do this, but I for one think its getting out of hand over there and it'd be a service to Metafilter for you guys to take a gander and poke around.

It is otherwise the most awesome community on the interwebs and worth more than the $5 fee to join (which is to keep trolls and fishers out, not to in any way limit member numbers or participation).

So, it'd be totally cool if Dale and/or Rain (Rain can get his own account since he is over 14) wanted to stop by. But it's also totally cool if you don't feel like you want to go to any more completely unnecessary justification on this really humorous endeavor.

  35. This is the best thing I've ever seen! My dad was the same way--though HE threatened to streak my sister's and my marching band performances. He also claimed he wouldn't run--he'd simply saunter through the crowd stark naked, waving and saying, "Hi! I'm Megan and Katie's dad!" Embarrassing your child in a fun and lighthearted way is creative parenting at its best! It tells your kid "No matter how much you hate me/are embarrassed by me/wish I'd simply go away during your teenage years, I will NEVER stop being your dad (or mom!) and will be here smiling and waving no matter what--and I'll do it in a fun way." Trust me--every other kid on that bus wishes they lived at YOUR house. My friends always envied my funny, lighthearted dad, no matter how much he mortified me!

  36. By the way, the poster "Katie and Ken Baldwin" is my sister. We both loved our dad's quirky sense of humor. (Our "dad" is actually our stepdad, but he's really just "Dad" to us.)

  38. I am totally inspired by the creativity involved and how much of a family effort this was! I wish you all were my neighbors!! Move to Wisconsin?

  50. Awesome! I'm sitting here in Stockholm Sweden with a nearly 13 year old who is somewhat sour at times and showed him this. He laughed (thankfully) and thought it was very cool. But then begged us not to do this to him. Well done! You seem like an incredibly fabulous family and are raising your kids with an enormous sense of humour and a great deal of love. Fantastic. Your son will one day know how much you love him, even if right now it's a tad embarrassing. I especially love the donation for his college/therapy fund. LMAO!

  52. Thanks for the laugh and the reminder that there are still amaazing parents out there who are raising wonderful kids and having fun doing it!! I taught public school for 14 years and left for the corporate world, but my husband is still teaching. You could have the world's best teachers, but everyone seems to forget that parents matter the most in children's lives. And embarrassed or not, your kids know for sure that you love them and are committed to their happiness. Such a beautiful thing! And you show that it doesn't take money. Just some time and effort (and lots of fun!).

  99. Hey weirdwavingdad - Got Hate?

This is a cute and funny idea and blog - I don't think his kid is going to be scarred for life from seeing his dad in a wedding dress. People dress up on Halloween in some really crazy costumes, so what's the big deal here?

There are plenty of really awful parents out there doing some amazingly cruel and criminal things to their kids. This dad is doing something that I'll bet most kids would like - taking the time to acknowledge his son as he goes off to school each day. How many kids only see their dads on the weekend because they leave early and get back late due to a long commute each day?

How about the kids who don't have a dad? I'll bet they'd be happy to have someone waving at them every day as they go off to school! Whether in a silly costume or not!

We spend too much time criticizing others for what they are doing and maybe not enough time just taking care of -- and minding our own business.

This family looks like they are a loving and fun-loving family. So why not take the hate somewhere else?

And as to putting the donation link on the site - good for them! This story has gone viral so why shouldn't they get help with their kids college education? People with a lot less merit are asking others for "donations" all the time. I get asked for money by some shady charity at least twice a week and believe me they've never been as entertaining as this site has been!

So if someone wants to donate to them that's between the family and the donor. No one is asking YOU for any money.

Stop being such a hater and go get some fun in your life. From the looks of your comments you don't seem to have any.

  100. I lived in Utah for 2 school years, so "Missionary Man" was my favorite.

I always enjoy it when I see parents who look like they actually, you know, want & like & enjoy & treasure their children. It's a wonderful thing, when it happens like that.

    Good for you.

  107. I first read about your story from a friend's posting through Facebook. I must say, it made me laugh and smile. He now says that he can't wait for his two-year-old son to grow into his teen, so he can also do embarrassing stuff like you. =)

BTW, you were also mentioned in UK's The Daily Telegraph Newspaper.

How about a Port-a-Potti, Valentine's Card, Valentines Candy Hearts,
Candy Corn, Pop-Rocks, a six pack of soda, a pokeman, Barney, Be-Bop, an inmate and a group shower (just add a few extra feet ;).

I thought my parent was bad!

  110. I wish everyone in the world had a dad like Dale. This is one of the most wonderful stories I have ever read on the internet. What a great imagination. I have only one question - do you want to adopt me and my kids?

    ReplyDelete
  111. ER-

This is an easy one to pick apart:

"People dress up on Halloween in some really crazy costumes, so what's the big deal here?"

That's because that's Halloween! Not every day! This is EVERY DAY of the school year in front of all his friends. There are much better ways to show your kid you love them than embarrassing them in front of their friends. Look at the quotes directly from the kid's mouth and tell me he likes it. This should end it there, but I'll keep going.

"There are plenty of really awful parents out there doing some amazingly cruel and criminal things to their kids. This dad is doing something that I'll bet most kids would like - taking the time to acknowledge his son as he goes off to school each day."

MOST KIDS WOULD LIKE THIS?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?!

    "

We spend too much time criticizing others for what they are doing and maybe not enough time just taking care of -- and minding our own business."

Mr. Cool Dad here is the one how made this public and wants the attention for himself and his son, and I also think he also wants a little less on his up-and-coming college tuition bills.

    "

"This family looks like they are a loving and fun-loving family. So why not take the hate somewhere else?"

They look happy, but the kid's quotes say differently.

    "

And as to putting the donation link on the site - good for them! This story has gone viral so why shouldn't they get help with their kids college education? People with a lot less merit are asking others for "donations" all the time. I get asked for money by some shady charity at least twice a week and believe me they've never been as entertaining as this site has been!"

I'll remember this when my kids go to college. I just gotta think of some stupid internet scam to get my 15 minutes of fame in and cash out. (i.e. - Burning the Koran, the world is going to end in May 2011, the hot air ballon kid, standing outside in wedding dresses and waving at my kid.) I can think of some stupid thing to blow up online and cash out.

    "

So if someone wants to donate to them that's between the family and the donor. No one is asking YOU for any money."

But they are asking me for money. That's why the link is there.

    "
Stop being such a hater and go get some fun in your life. From the looks of your comments you don't seem to have any."

I love my life because I have parents who are still together, supportive, don't get themselves off by making me look stupid in front of my friends, and respect my opinion if disagree with them. I have plenty of happiness and that's why I don't wanna see this kid have to deal with this. For some reason there are people still out there who think he likes it and it's the best possible way to show your kids you love them, while making a few extra bucks on the side of course. But most kids would want and actually prefer for their dad to dress up in a goofy outfit every day in front of their friends according to you, so once every parent starts doing this now all across America next year we can all thank you for healing the parent/child separation.

Still, go back to the kid's quotes and tell me differently.

  115. As I finished up reading your story, I am drying tears from my eyes. What a wonderful story! I am a 46 year old woman who was blessed to have a mom with quite the sense of humor! Fifteen years ago I started flying to California from Oregon for a long "girls weekend" once a year with my mom. Most loved ones are met at the airport by their families dressed in everyday clothes....my mom? NOT A CHANCE! What fun would that be? Oh no, my mom would be waiting with all the other loved ones on the lower level, at the bottom of the escalator dressed up....as a cow, a princess, a tiger, a pumpkin or Uncle Sam and many other crazy characters!! She wouldn't just be waiting, she would be waving her arms, jumping up and down shouting my name! It was VERY easy to pick me out cuz I was the one with the red face!! The time she dressed as a cow, she didn't just dress up, she had to bend over the plants inside the airport and "graze" the greenery! I once asked her why she did this and her response was "cuz when I am gone, you will have these memories". I lost my mom to cancer March 6th of this year and her words keep coming back to me. I have spent the past 3 months reliving those memories! At her funeral, up front, I had the picture of her in her cow costume enlarged to share with others how wonderful my mom was and how blessed I was to have her as MY mom! What I wouldn't give to see her dressed up one more time! You are creating wonderful memories for your children....they are so very lucky!

  117. pamwoitt, what a beautiful story! Thank you so much for sharing. Comments like these warm my heart and let me know it was all worthwhile, even on those very cold mornings. I think at some point we'll have to print all these waves in a book and give them to Rain (and our other kids, for that matter). I'm sure they'll be treasured long after we're gone.

    ReplyDelete
  118. oh, weirdwavingdad101, don't make me delete your comments (although I might, because it makes me feel so powerful). We're all here for a good time. Haters can go to all those other forums and talk smack.

And in fact, I don't need to analyze quotes to know my son Rain loved it, too. He and his friends would lower the bus windows and wave back, LAUGHING! Some of his friends would even walk past the "other bus stop" so they could get on with him at his stop and watch the wave. Don't go trying to project your own issues onto my son's quotes.

Rain is off at a youth camp at Brigham Young University this week, and by the time he returns on Saturday this whole wave of publicity will likely have passed. We did this without going viral for the past nine months, and we breathed a sigh of relief when we thought it was over. Now that we realize it's not quite over, we find ourselves laughing all over again, along with the rest of the world. We did this for him, and as a way of sharing laughs with friends and family members who enjoy our sense of humor. If you don't like our humor, click around somewhere else in that big world wide web out there.

  121. Dearest family in Utah…

Don't delete WeirdWavingDad's quotes: just let them sit there as evidence of the sad, sour lives that cause people to leave such loveless, embittered comments.

I think that this is one of the sweetest, brightest spots I've seen in my 20 years on the internet. I think the reading and film material that gave you these quotes are evidence enough of your brilliant love.

This is creative, loving, hilarious, and BRILLIANT.

I do not share a common religion with most people—certainly not LDS—BUT…BUT…You have all touched my heart and I'm shaking my head in disbelief at this amazing display (and commitment) of love and inspiration.

God bless you all. The WORLD who can still laugh will treasure you after you're gone. I love you all. LUCKY RAIN!!!

  128. Hey weirdwavingdad101, I'm Rikki, Rain's sister. Rain and I have been best friends for 16 years, so I feel like I know him fairly (incredibly) well. First, you can't speak for my brother when you don't know who he is, what his personality is like, and what our family dynamic is. We laugh with each other and we love each other. Family comes first for the Price's.

First major point: My brother loved the whole thing just as much as my parents, me, and Riot. And actually, it wasn't my dad's idea to make this into a blog and get this famous. He was just trying to have some fun and show Rain some love.

Yes, Rain is happy. He is one of the most secure high schooler's I've ever known. He knows who he is, he's comfortable with who he is, and he loves himself. Rain was HAPPY when he gave those quotes.

Donation: I feel like ER should have worded that a little differently. No one is FORCING you to donate. And this isn't a "scam". Just btw. Why on earth would we ruin such a fun thing? Try and tell me that there aren't bloggers out there who make money off of their blogs. How is this any different?

My parents have been together for over 22 years, they have supported all of us children (notice the Marching Band snippet? That's not cheap, but Rain loves it, so we make it happen for him) in whatever we choose to do with our life, and they don't make us look "stupid", as all of my friends (and Rain's, and Riot's) think that are parents are awesome and cool because of how much fun they'll have. Not every parent is going to do this. We have no parent/child separation in my family. All of us are close to our parents; both as a group of children with the parents, and as individuals with each parent.

Now for your first post. Rain is never teased, bullied, or made "the joke of the school" by my parents. He's actually quite popular, and everyone loves him. He's secure in himself, and if someone tried to make fun of him for this blog, he'd laugh and go along with the fact that his dad his "weird" and "funny". Haha who wouldn't want ammo for their future kids? And quite frankly, the gene pool comment was offensive, and it reminds me of how cruel a person will be on the internet because of anonymity. One, this act wasn't stupid. Two, if Rain doesn't have kids, there's still two other siblings who can. ;)

If some girl came up to Rain and was all "Oh! You're the kid with the weird dad who waved in goofy outfits at the bus all year! Haha! Why is your dad so weird...?" then he would be flattered and joke along with her.

I had the best childhood I could have ever asked for growing up. Rain is getting the same. So is Riot. Our parents love us, and want us to grow up to be responsible adults who can laugh, be happy, and enjoy life. They teach us, while still making sure that we know that they love us.

I quote my mom: "Don't go trying to project your own issues onto my [brother's] quotes.... If you don't like our humor, click around somewhere else in that big world wide web out there."

  133. Thank you for giving us dad's an example of how to be fun and loving towards our kids. Yes many kids on that bus may have looked forward to seeing you wave, because to some of them you were the only "dad" they ever knew who would care that much to see them off.
I teach at a country school in Striki Latvia and make it my point to stand at the front door and greet each students with a smile and a hand shake. Even to the ones who don't like me. Because I know one day when they get older, they will remember some one cared enough to say hello to them.
    Anyway, thank you

HAD to get over here and read this blog in its entirety.
    I love it.
I love that you are able to laugh with your family, and I think you both are incredibly awesome parents.

What a wonderful memory you all created for your son and all the other busriders! It will be a story they recall at reunions or tell around the dinner table to their own children and grandchildren. 184. Dale, you're my hero! As a 37 year old father of 3, I hope to be half as aweseom of a dad as you! Thought about having a quick cameo on Conan O'Brien each night to show what the day's costume was? I bet it would be a hit!!!! Ben From Minnesota

  187. I just wanted to tell you that our family thinks you guys are the absolute coolest!!! I aspire to be this kind of a parent--full of life, humor, and love for my kids. I cannot wait for my husband and oldest to come home tonight so that we can go through your blog as a family and smile and giggle at the amazing memories you have created for your son. Thank you so much for sharing them with us!

  188. I don't share the other reader's enthusiasm. I found this story to be sad. Here's a father dressing up like women, sitting on a toilet, along with a variety of other adult costumes, with the sole purpose of humiliating his 16 year old teen - as a joke, not once, but everyday of the year. The 16 year old didn't seem to think it was that funny in the beginning, but then went for the ride as he had no choice, no voice. And now to make the entire humiliation festival even better, this family is collecting money from it. I'm sorry - this isn't funny.

  190. This is just awesome. Good for you! I just love the commitment to making Rain and the entire school bus of children's day start off happy. So many children don't even get a proper send off to school. My husband is also a fireman, and his "alter ego" is a pirate as well! :) Kudos to you and your family for helping a generation of kids have a great start to their day!! Thank you so much for sharing!

  191. You guys are wonderful! And despite the negative comments I see may I offer to those folks, "Lighten up! Life is for living and these folks know how to do it!"

Best regards to all of you,

  192. To the "people" who made the unpleasant comments You are pathetic & uptight. Its irrelevant how YOU feel. What matters is how Rain & his family feel. Maybe he was embarrassed at 1st, but so what. As adults we often have to deal with embarrassing situations, if we can't deal with them then we are in trouble. So, its good that he CAN deal with embarrassment. The article says after the initial embarrassment he enjoyed his Fathers antics, anyone assuming otherwise is ASSUMING & they have no basis for those assumptions.

As for the people asking about the guns, the expense etc. Its really not YOUR business.

IMO,its just great, I would have loved to see the performances.
